Writing has been one of my passions ever since being a child. My language of choice may have changed through the years, but the passion and fulfillment once I am satisfied with a piece remain the same. Here are some professional writing samples, © Simon

Press Releases

Think Greensburg LogoPress Releases constitute perhaps the most basic aspect of any public relations career. Here’s some of my previous work in that department:

Greensburg SummerSounds: As part of an internship for the Greensburg Community Development Corporation, I completed several press releases promoting the 2011 installment of the Greensburg SummerSounds Concert Series, to be sent out to local media outlets such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Tribune Review, and WYEP Radio. Following are the general press release announcing the series and a few specific releases for the bands performing:

Summer in the City: Also for my internship at the GCDC, I wrote this press release announcing the 2011 Summer in the City event, organized by downtown Greensburg merchants to promote the city.

Media Kit

For a Public Relations class in Fall 2010, I wrote and assembled a media kit containing a press release, a fact sheet, two biographies, and a company backgrounder. The media kit covered the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, held on October 30th by satirical commentators Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in front of an estimated audience of over 200,000 people at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The media kit is now used as an example for students of the class.

Camcorder Manual

As technical writing aims to provide clear-cut and easy-to-read instructions rather than persuading an audience, it presents a unique challenge for the writer. During my work study position as a Public Relations Assistant at the Saint Vincent Archabbey Public Relations Office, I had the opportunity to prove my technical writing skills when writing an instructional manual for a new HD camcorder to be used by aspiring priests. The result, 12 pages worth of pictures, captions, and explanations, is now used throughout the Saint Vincent Seminary.

Think Greensburg LogoWhile interning at the Greensburg Community Development corporation, I was responsible for the writing, layout, and distribution of a biweekly electronic newsletter. The GCDC ThinkGreensburg! E-Newsis sent out to over 700 business and community contacts, informing them about community events, business news, and development activities in and around Greensburg, PA.

Agency Analysis

For an Advertising class during the Spring of 2011, I took a look at the global Advertising Agency BBDO Worldwide to understand the structure and philosophy of a successful agency in the digital age. The result is a thorough analysis of the agencyand its key employees, together with a creative brief for a possible advertisement continuing the BBDO General Electric Campaign. The Analysis is now used as an example for students in class.

Of course, my writing skills extend beyond analytical and professional writing. In my free time, I like to get creative by writing essays and short stories about various topics floating through my head. These essays then find their way onto various blogs, such as this little story written during the demolition of a key building on Saint Vincent College Campus.

Under the alias ‘Simonsen,’ I also contribute as a front page editor for BehindtheSteelCurtain.com, one of the leading fansites of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Topics here range from random thoughts on the Steelers (such as this article on the Offensive Line or my description of a Steeler fan experience) to a more specific column about ‘Five Players to Watch‘ before each game day. Contributing to BehindtheSteelCurtain allows me to combine my two passions, writing and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
